Congratulations Shaunna Burke!

The second Canadian woman to have summited Mount Everest met via video conference with the students participating in Expedition Everest at the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. OCDSB Chair of the Board Lynn Graham was able to congratulate her on behalf of the Board and Dave Dobbin, COO for Telecom Ottawa congratulated her on behalf of Telecom Ottawa. Students were then able to ask Shaunna questions and interact as she was sitting in front of her tent, at Base Camp on Mount Everest.

Way to go Shaunna, we are all proud of you!

From February-May 2005 the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, in partnership with Telecom Ottawa, is supporting Ben Webster and Shaunna Burke as they attempt to summit Mount Everest.

Follow every step as they fight the elements, the altitude and their own fears on the OCDSB Expedition Everest Website. You can view video clips, hear audio reports and keep track of them as they attempt to summit Mount Everest.

expedition everest logoThis partnership with Ben Webster, Telecom Ottawa and the OCDSB allows students from six area high schools to follow every move Ben’s team makes as they ascend the mountain, all framed around curriculum designed with the help of Algonquin College.

Teachers spent a week at Algonquin developing curriculum to be implemented during the Everest summit attempt. Teachers were grouped according to curriculum areas and collaborative projects were designed to be implemented in their classrooms.

Dingboche, NepalStudents enrolled in participating classes will be using the OCDSB’s Learning Management System, Blackboard, to collaborate asynchronously with each other. As well, all six schools will be equipped with video conferencing equipment to collaborate synchronously. The Communications Research Centre, stationed at Shirley’s Bay, has supported this part of the project.

Participating classes will be able to hear about Ben and Shaunna's progress twice a week, see taped video feeds that will be sent back to the OCDSB through satellite video-phone, interact with them by participating in on-line chats and hopefully connect to Ben and Shaunna on the mountain via videoconference!
